Gottfried was born on the farm near Fredonia, North Dakota andreceived his education at Logan County Country School near there.Followinghis education, he continued to live and farm with hisparents. He married Lilia Munsch in Fredonia and they continued tolive and farm theRiebhagen farm until they retired from farming andmoved to Wishek in1979. While on the farm he served as chairman ofthe Janke Township Board. He enjoyed playing and watching sports,especially golf, bowling and hunting. His greatest enjoyment however,was farming.
