Karl Gruszie, Maria and seven children immigrated to Canada fromKassel, South Russia. They arrived by boat in New York on February17, 1912. From New York they proceeded by train to Irvine, Albertaand the final distance to Rural District of Deer Forks, now Burstall,by horseand wagon. Fortunately, they found housing accommodation witha friend at Sandy Point. Mr. Henry Schmidt, a bachelor, offered toshare the shanty he had built on his homestead.
Karl took up homestead by Burstall and the farm was still there in1985. John Gruszie bought the land and he still has the land nearBurstall and rents it out.
