William (Bill) grew up in Hampton, Middlesex, England and attendedschool at Twickenham. He graduated from the Kingston Institute ofTechnology and was a self employed engineer. Bill has three grownchildrenfrom a previous marriage: Deborah Anne Carter born January 2,1965 in Woking, England, Michael William Carter born February 29, 1968in Seattle, Washington and Robert David Carter born September 5, 1969in Seattle, Washington. Memories from Uncle Ben and Aunt LeNora Ulmer: "We did not knowBillvery well but a few observations come to mind. Bill was alwayshappy to be part of the family and enjoyed the reunions andparticipated in all the activities. He was very knowledgeable aboutso many pursuits and topics. I thought he was brilliant and easy tovisit with. Heconversed about any topic. The last time we saw him hedrew a map for us to show how to reach his and Kim's home in NorthOgden from I-15. We were never able to stop there since we haven'tgone down to Arizona since that time. We thought that Bill and Kimwere good for eachother and were happy. The whole family gained fromhaving had him with us although it was all too brief."
Memories from father in law, Karl Ulmer: "It took me the longest timeto understand Bill's English accent and I'm sure I often gave himagoofy answer when I didn't understand him and didn't want to beembarrased.
I recall one evening when they were living in Dayton, Ohio and we werereturning from a game in his old rickety Honda when we got caught in asnowstorm. Bill stuck his head out the window to drive as itwassnowing, icy and treacherous, but we made it home!
Bill was a real "brain" and I got to loving him very much. I willnever forget his musical talent and ability and will always miss thepiano playing when I visit Kim. This was his way to relax. He couldplay it all ... pop, classic, jazz, rag, waltzes (you name it) andmost of it from memory.
I know one thing for certain. He sure made my daughter happy as heunderstood her needs and her love. They fit together and trulyenjoyedeach other."
Memories from Uncle Milton Ulmer & Aunt Avelon: "I remember Bill asavery good and intelligent man with a very distinctive British accentwhich we sometimes found difficult to understand but in the finalanalysis, he would always get you to understand. He was a greatphotographer. He loved to take pictures of the "scenes behind thescenes," which were often of much more worth than the primary scene.Bill tooksome pictures of our family which we were not aware of at thetime. He later gave them to us. Those pictures are the ones thatwill be cherished forever by our family. They could not have beenbetter if we had posed for them. Bill caught a moment and preservedit for us."
Memories from cousin, Kathie Ulmer Ketterling, Hay: "Bill was averykind, gentle man. Some of us were not given the priviledge to gettoknow him very well since he didn't live in the area. Family tieswere important to him."
Memories from Aunt Monica Ulmer Hallerud: "I first met Bill on a tripwe took to North Dakota in the 80's. I think Olaf and Karen camealong and we went to visit quite a few cousins in Fargo. We ended upat Jean Kirmis's home (now Jean Mahlum), and Bill and Kim were there.Iremember Bill played the piano and entertained us royally. He wastalented and fun-loving and we were all impressed with Kim's friend.Everyone liked him and thought his British accent was really neat!Hewas a caring, loving person."
Memories from cousin, Diana Renek Hallerud: "I only had theopportunity to meet Bill once, but he was a very warm person with awonderful sense of humor. He made Kim very happy."
Memories from Aunt Gertrude Ulmer Anderson: "I did not get to knowBill very well at first, as in Kim and Bill's early years we hadcontactonly at summer birthday picnics for my dad in Ellendale.Later, I learned to visit with him more as I found out he was born inEngland, and that's where Ed and I were teaching school. Turns out hecame froma village that we had been through many times. Bill and Kimcame to stay with us in Hilton, England when they made a trip overseasto see his family. Kim was planning her wedding then and meetingBill's family for the first time. We went out to a local pub fordinner and hada good time. Bill was a great conversationalist andcould tell the most interesting stories."
