Biography

Christine and Peter Billigmeier came to the United States on 30July,1873 with their twin daughters, 9 months old Christina andElizabeth. They homesteaded near Scotland in Dakota Territory and hadthree more daughters: Catherine, Unknown, and Christiana. AfterPeter lost his life by drowning, Christina was unable to take care ofthe farm byherself with five small children, so in a few short monthsshe married their hired man, Jacob Munsch.

In November, she and Jacob loaded the children in the buggy and madetheir way to the preacher's house. When they announced they wantedtobe married, the preacher looked out the window at all the childrensitting in the buggy. He smiled, and then asked, "Well, why did youwait so long?"

Christina had 11 more children with Jacob Munsch. None of the fiveBilligmeier daughters survived the diphtheria epidemic of 1878.

Memories: Mildred Ulmer Gebhardt says she has a faint memory ofGrandma walking into her house in Kulm wearing a long black dress.
