Biography

When Karl was 15 years old, he moved with his family to a farm nearLeola, South Dakota where his parents were homesteaders and raisedwheat, corn and oats. When he married Elizabeth, they moved first toa farm near Zeeland, North Dakota then bought a farm near Wishek,North Dakota. He later sold the farm and moved into Wishek with hisfamily where he worked in a hardware shop until he started his ownbusiness, a harness shop where he sold and repaired harnesses. Helater expanded the business by making picture frames and did shoerepairs with the help of his father. Times were hard and he hadextended much credit to his customers who were now unable to pay. Helost his business and the large house he had built in Wishek. Karland Elizabeth moved back onto a rented farm north of Wishek to raisesheep, but times continuedto worsen. In 1942 they moved to Milan,Michigan where children Laura, Enock and Aaron were living. Theyfound work in a wood manufacturing plant and eventually were able tobuy a house. Karl and Elizabeth lived there for the rest of theirlives.
