Herbert Henry EMDE
MEMORIES:
Anne's granddaughter, Amber Barilotti Altman: "Herb loved to laughand make Grammie laugh. There wasn't a time that he coudn't make mesmile or laugh too. Also he was wonderful cook."
Stepdaughter, Deborah Stroh Powers: "I remember Herb as a bit of aprankster who was always joking around. Herb and Mom were able tovisit many places and I remember how he loved to travel."
Brother in law, Benjamin Ulmer: "Herb was an instant "hit" as hebecame part of the Ulmer family. I remember how well he was receivedat the Ulmer reunion at Warrensburg, Missouri. The younger generationloved "Uncle Herb" and his wit and humor.
He was easy to get to know. His personality, although rather low key, shined through and he became one of us almost instantly. Hetalkedadmiringly of the Stroh family and helped them on many occasionas was reported by Anne. Although Anne loved her "Teddy" very much,Herb came along and filled a big void as she needed it. He seemedvery good for Anne and helped her as she was devastated at the loss ofTed.
Herb was a capable and fine person. We had the oppoortunity tovisithim several times in his home in Hemet and he was always agracious Host and kept us entertained. We miss Herb."
Brother in law, Milton Ulmer & wife, Avelon: "Herb, the new member ofthe group loved to travel (with Ann). He kept all of us entertainedwith his classic E-Mail messages as long as he was able. He also wasgood about keeping Ann in touch with all of us by phone. Quite oftenhe would do the calling and then get her to respond as well. We willmiss all of them.
Nephew, John Ulmer: "Uncle Herb came to all of us later in life, andthe opportunities to get to know him were, unfortunately, few andfarbetween. I do know that he adored Anne, and that they had a lot offun together. The T-shirts that he made for them for the Warrensburgreunion reflected his great sense of humor. Apparently, T-shirts weresome kind of hobby for him, because he and Anne sent me aparticularlyobnoxious (but loving) one for my 40th birthday. Herb wasa friendly, outgoing guy who instantly fit in with the rest of thefamily. He will be missed."
Sister in law, Monica Ulmer Hallerud: "I think I first met Herb onthe phone, as Anne introduced him that way after they were married in1990. Herb was a great kidder and loved to laugh. He also loved totravel and he and Anne had several overseas trips, as well astravelingthe country in their RV. When I visited them in 1998, wedrove from Hemet to Martinez to spend Thanksgiving with Denice andfamily. It was a long trek for one day and Herb insisted I driveoccasionally, so he could rest his eyes. The Lincoln Continental waslarge and it was all a bit daunting, but somehow I managed and wasmore than ready fo trade places after Herb rested each time."
Anne's niece, Karen Hallerud Moore: "Herb fit right in to our family. My kids were smaller at the time of their visit to Independence.Herb held Katie on his lap. I think he liked children. Stephen andKatie always called him "Uncle Erb" instead of Herb. I don't know ifthey couldn't pronounce the "H" or if it just sounded cute and thenamestuck. To his day they still refer to him as "Uncle Erb". Herbwas kind and gentle and had a great sense of humor. We miss them bothvery much.
Anne's nephew, Eric Hallerud: "In 1992 we met Aunt Anne's new husbandHerb Emde at the Ulmer Reunion in Missouri. Herb was moved by thespeed at which he was accepted and adopted as "Uncle Herb. " I thinkJohn Ulmer called him "Uncle" first and then we all followed suit.Hisscandalous T-shirts were one of the highlights of the reunion. Hissense of humor and adventure seemed a good match for Anne."
Sister in law, Gertrude Ulmer Anderson: " I didn't meet Herb until heand Anne were married a couple of years. I think the first time I methim, they made a trip to Arizona when we were home for Christmas fromOverseas. They arrived in their motor home and invited us over fordrinks and snacks. He impressed me with his knowledge of food and hislove of traveling. He loved to visit and liked a bit of "spice" inhis life. When He and Anne showed up for a family reunion inMissouri, he wore a flashy t-shirt with Anne's face along with thebody ofa buxom young gal! Later when Anne's health began to fail, heworkedvery hard to take care of her until it became necessary to moveher into a home."
Anne's niece, Gwen Anderson Struble: "I think of Herb with his neatwhite hair, lots of gold jewelry, and a funny T-shirt of abikini-cladbabe with Aunt Anne's face at the top!
Thank you for filling Anne's golden days with fun, dinners out andlots of travel. Thank you for your love, devotion, and committment inhealth and more importantly in sickness. Thank you for keeping us intouch with Aunt Anne when she no longer could do it on her own."
Anne's niece, Sandra Anderson Bolduc: "I don't really know a lotabout Herb, except I remember he loved life, and was a happy guy. Heloved his motorhome, big gold jewelry, and Anne. He was fun, kind ofa roly poly bear."

Hello, Thank you so much for writing a beautiful summary of Herbert Henry Emde. I am working on my husband’s family tree and I just recently discovered my relative was his 1st. wife (Carmen L Stinson). I have never met her but wish I could have met you all. Anyway, Carmen’s father John Corum Stinson was my husband’s grandfather’s older brother. I have a photo for John Corum but I do not have a photo of Carmen. A few day’s ago I found a pic of Herbert when he was very small on Ancestry.com. Feel free to contact me by email. I have a lot of question to ask or forward my email to someone that knows about her. Look forward to hearing from you. Take Care, Robin M. Stinson
Herbert Henry Emde was my mother’s uncle (Her mother was an Emde). I moved to CA in February 1989 just after Carmen passed away in January. “Uncle” Herb took me to their double wide trailer home in Hemet CA. He showed me all their photos over the years and I even read a journal log of a trip to China to see the Great Wall which she had always wanted to go and see. I am sorry that I do not have any of those photos. She was cutie. She was quite the dancer. Uncle Herb told me they went square dancing all the time. I became disabled shortly after that and moved back to the East Coast and took care of my parents until they passed away. I had met his bride to be Anne before moving back. I did not move back until 2006 and Anne had passed away- I missed their wedding and getting to know her side of the family. The Emde cousins–Becklers–lived in Hemet in the same trailer complex. They all did motor home travels together. Herb took me through the one he and Carmen used, which he sold and bought another one. I am not certain if any of the Emde’s in Hemet are still there. I am just now beginning the family history–sooooo IF I run across any of her photos I will let you know. My mother was a fantasic photo collector so I know she did not have any. But there must be one among the historians in the Emde, Beckler group. When I send out the history files to the ones I have addresses for I will let them know we as yet do not have a photo of her.
Always nice to meet an extended family member.
Just a thought. The Lutheran Church there may have their own history photos. I know they were all very active in the church.
