Biography

Peter and Christina came to the US on the ship "Thuringia" whichdeparted Russia on July 15, 1873. They were accompanied by twindaughtersChristine and Elizabeth. They settled in Bon-Homme County,Dakota Territory near the present town of Scotland, South Dakota.

On April 17, 1877 Peter and his brother Anton went to the JamesRiverMill at Maxwell by boat to have some wheat ground into flour. Ithadbeen a severe winter with much snow and the river was swollen fromthe melting snow and ice. They were caught by swift currents whichtipped the boat and both Peter and Anton were drowned. Christina wasleft a widow with five small children.

Documentation: The following article appeared in the May 3, 1877issue of the Press and Dakotian: "The body of one of the Russians whowere drowned quite recently at Maxwell has not been recovered, andcannot be until the water falls."

This must certainly be Peter, as Anton's body was recovered.According to my mother, Martha Munsch, Peter's body was never found.
